KRH Klinikum Agnes Karll Laatzen Completes €250,000 OR Modernization – Enhanced Sterile Storage and State-of-the-Art Tech Boost Efficiency and Safety
The operating room (OR) department at KRH Klinikum Agnes Karll in Laatzen, Germany, has undergone a comprehensive €250,000 upgrade, transforming outdated spaces into a modern, efficient hub for surgical care. The project, now fully complete, focused on dismantling a disused sterilization area to create expansive sterile goods storage while upgrading critical infrastructure across four ORs. This initiative ensures uninterrupted operations, improved hygiene, and future-proof patient safety as part of the hospital’s Medicine Strategy 2030.
From Cluttered Rooms to Streamlined Storage: Key Structural Overhaul
The centerpiece was the complete gutting of three small, obsolete rooms into one open, spacious storage area. This redesign establishes a clear separation between clean and contaminated zones, dramatically enhancing organization – especially for sterilization trays holding surgical instruments. The new layout simplifies handling, reduces retrieval times, and optimizes workflows for OR staff.
Safety enhancements include a fully renewed floor covering in the OR airlock and restored corridor walls, minimizing slip risks and improving durability. Medical equipment is now compactly stored, freeing up valuable space and promoting a clutter-free environment.
Cutting-Edge Tech Upgrade: Adjustable Ceiling Supply Units in All ORs
All four ORs received new ceiling supply units (DVEs), replacing outdated models with electrically height-adjustable systems equipped with modern network connectivity. These units consolidate essential supplies – power, data, and medical gases – directly overhead, enabling seamless integration of advanced surgical tools and real-time monitoring. The upgrades align with current standards for electrical safety and digital interoperability.
Seamless Implementation: Zero Downtime Achieved
Meticulous planning, close collaboration with hospital leadership, OR teams, hygiene experts, and occupational safety officers ensured continuous OR availability. Flexible shift adjustments by staff allowed the project to proceed without disruptions, demonstrating exemplary project management.
Strategic Fit: Part of Broader Hospital Renewal
This OR modernization advances KRH’s Medicine Strategy 2030, emphasizing patient-centered innovation. Upcoming projects include DVE replacements in the intensive care unit and expansion of the central emergency department, signaling sustained investment in regional healthcare infrastructure.
Prof. Dr. Jan Ortlepp, Medical Director at KRH Klinikum Agnes Karll Laatzen, emphasized: „These upgrades guarantee our OR meets today’s and tomorrow’s demands for patient safety, hygiene, and staff protection.“
