To the Mars: Will Elon fly?

Based on the available information, it appears unlikely that Elon Musk will personally fly to Mars in the near future, though he has expressed a desire to do so eventually.

Musk has consistently stated his ambition to make humanity a multi-planetary species, with Mars as the primary target[1]. However, he has also acknowledged the extreme risks involved in early Mars missions. In a 2022 interview, Musk said: „I think for the first mission to Mars, I’d be happy to go and die on impact. I’d be happy to go and die on Mars, just not on impact“[2].

SpaceX’s current timeline aims to send the first uncrewed Starships to Mars in 2026, with potential crewed missions following in 2028 or 2030[3]. However, these dates have been pushed back several times already, and many experts consider them highly optimistic[4].

A 2024 study published in Nature Scientific Reports analyzed the feasibility of SpaceX’s Mars mission plans and found significant technological gaps that need to be addressed[6]. The study concluded that the current plans do not yield a return flight opportunity due to excessive system mass, highlighting the immense challenges of such a mission.

From a practical standpoint, as the founder and CEO of multiple companies including SpaceX and Tesla, Musk’s responsibilities on Earth make it unlikely he would undertake such a risky, long-duration mission in the near term[7]. His role in driving technological development and securing funding for Mars missions may be more valuable than his personal presence on an early expedition.

Additionally, Musk has five young children, which could factor into his decision-making regarding personal space travel[8]. He has not publicly committed to being on the first crewed Mars mission, instead focusing on making such missions possible for others.

While Musk’s ultimate goal may include visiting Mars himself, it seems more probable that he will prioritize establishing a sustainable presence on Mars through SpaceX’s missions before considering a personal journey. His emphasis has been on enabling millions of people to travel to and potentially settle on Mars, rather than on being among the first to go[1][3].

In conclusion, while Elon Musk remains deeply committed to the goal of Mars colonization, current evidence suggests he is unlikely to be among the first humans to set foot on the Red Planet. His focus appears to be on developing the technology and infrastructure necessary to make Mars missions feasible and eventually routine, rather than on personally participating in the initial, highly risky expeditions.
